How much of MPP is actually sampled from outside sources? Like I know the percussion in Brothersport is taken from some African choir or something. Like, how many of the sounds were directly made from the band versus the sampled material?

Hashman's ghost- 07-16-2009

It's mostly their own pre-recorded material, I'm sure. I think the major outside sample they used was the Lion in a Coma jaw harp thing which is why they credited it? What African choir was this? I'm pretty sure that hasn't been posted in this thread already and I've never heard it mentioned.

RE: brother sport I think it was a Brazilian drum band or something rather than an African choir. Panda mentioned this in an interview I think, but didn't specify. I think!

RE: brother sport I think it was a Brazilian drum band or something rather than an African choir. Panda mentioned this in an interview I think, but didn't specify. I think! yeah i'm pretty sure he said he originally had sampled a tropicália beat, i even think he said something about it being caetano veloso (will have to check up on that) but i'm pretty sure they re-recorded all the samples themselves except for the jaw-harp (which is why it's the only one credited) to avoid copyright issues. but then again, that's just speculation on my part.

That would make sense to me. I love how "Avey" is playing with a jaw harp in the 'Tickle Vultures' youtube video. It's so awesomely prophetic.

She also listens to alot of Animal Collective, I'm surprised she hasn't made that connection yet.

woooo spirit samples!!! this is great thanks! the voice at the end of spirit that says "youve just messed the whole thing up" always to me sounded slightly similar to the voice at the end of alvin row

qualia- 07-20-2009

awesome! how did you find that?? the voice at the end of spirit that says "youve just messed the whole thing up" i seem to recall that being Abby Portner (Avey's sister, for those not in the know).. whereas the sample at the end of alvin row is a sample from somewhere, possibly a television show? someone who knows correct me if i'm wrong :P

Jay- 07-20-2009

the one at the end of spirit is abby saying "dave you just messed the whole thing up!"
