How did you get into Animal Collective
Mine was a blog post Kanye West did on Animal Collective, strangely Kanye West likes them

my high school broadcasting teacher gave me their stuff (along with a butt load of other music). one day i heard "pride and fight" and was completely mystified. then i heard "baleen sample" without realizing it was the same band. and once again with "derek". by that point i was beginning to check them out more and right before mwpp came out i fell in love. then mwpp came out and i devoted my life to the band.

in 2005, my friend played sung tongs in the car and it went from there

In 2007, this forum I was on was going through this "new animal collective album is leaking now!" pandamonium. Had me intrigued, so I check the band out on allmusic...

Heard Person Pitch in a record store, a month later went to Borders and saw that Merriweather was 12 bucks, I said I take a listen mainly because it was cheap and the rest is history.

2006, iTunes suggested "Grass." Bought Sung Tongs, then devoured the rest.

watched the peacebone video, thought it was okay... a couple weeks later I have a song stuck in my head, but I couldn't remember what it was. It was peacebone, and as soon as I found that song I just began devouring all their music.

A friend sent me peacebone in 2007. Twas mindfucked. Started a semi-unhealthy obsession.

themilkfactory.co.uk talked about how good the 2003 releases were, made here comes the indian seem really great (even tho they rated campfire higher). and then hearing who could win a rabbit in 04 made me follow thru on that curiosity.

Blackwater- 07-19-2010

2007, /mu/ I learned about them from you.

I know it's pretty lame but I bought Sung Tongs when it came out just because it was rated high on Pitchfork and at that time (freshman year of high school) all I did was try and discover music. I really couldn't get my mind around it at first, I thought it was just intentional weirdness. But then a couple years later I gave it another shot and was amazed from start to finish and that's how my love affair started.

I first heard about AC from my brother who went to their concert in 2006 and thought they were weird but enjoyed it. He told me about them and Death Cab for Cutie about the same time, which is kind of funny because I connected those two bands together in my head for a while after that. Anyway, he burned a couple of CDs of the Tavastia, Helsinki bootleg for me along with some other music he thought I might like. I ended up losing the second disc (along with Fireworks, The Purple Bottle and Banshee Beat from that set!) but I listened to the first 8 songs a whole lot. His friend Dane, who he has his animating business with, also got Feels for Christmas or something so we were all listening to that at my house and dancing to The Purple Bottle and laughing at Bees. I bought Here Comes the Indian, Sung Tongs and Feels not long after and then I listened to the leaks of the Strawberry Jam songs in 2007 (I stopped listening to AC leaks before Water Curses, though). That was the first newly released album of theirs for me so it's always been quite special. 2006 - My brother saw their concert in Auckland that year and he introduced me to them with Feels and the Helsinki liveset that he burned to CD. I listened to all the Strawberry Jam leaks and bought the CD when it came out. The guy who ordered it for me at the store was one of maybe two people I have ever met who'd heard about Animal Collective before I talked to them. And as of today I have every one of their available CDs! I started listening between Strawberry/Feels (Tavastia, Helsinki 2006 boot FTW) and joined a while later.
