Animal Collective Album Mixtapes
This is kind of a long post. The reason for this thread is the third mixtape I write about, in case this is a TL,DNR scenario (so you can skip to that if you like). So with artists that I collect, I often like to make little 2-sided mixtapes that compile the songs of a certain era or recording period. Animal Collective, with their albums followed by EPs and/or B-sides, make this particularly easy. I compile a playlist and then go into Garageband and edit together some transitions. For the most part this is really easy, and entirely non-technical (consisting of counting out the beats so the next song starts on where a beat would have been had the song continued). Sometimes I mix up the order, sometimes I don't.... But anyways, these let me experience kind of "alternate," extended versions of these albums, so I enjoy them. I posted the lists for some of these before in a different thread, so here are those: "Strawberry Curses" Side A: Water Curses Peacebone Unsolved Mysteries Street Flash Chores For Reverend Green Fireworks Side B: #1 Winter Wonder Land Cobwebs Seal Eyeing Cuckoo Cuckoo Safer Derek Some of the transitions on this one are so good, you wonder why they didn't make it like this in the first place. For example, Water Curses into Peacebone is amazing, and it is astonishing why the last half of the album was not released as what I put together for Side B. Seal Eyeing -> Cuckoo Cuckoo -> Safer -> Derek is mind blowing. "Merriweather Fall, Be Kind" (couldn't fit From a Beach on it - it's about 1:20 as is) Side A: Brother Sport What Would I Want? Sky Lion in a Coma Bleed Side B: Summertime Clothes Guys Eyes Taste I Think I Can Side C: Graze Also Frightened Daily Routine Bluish Side D: In the Flowers On a Highway My Girls No More Runnin' I always liked the idea of Brother Sport opening the record, as it just brings the energy and sets the mood, and kinda reminds you that this record, in the way it was made, is more of a Panda record than an Avey record. I also really like the Brother Sport -> What Would I Want? Sky -> Lion in a Coma transition. After such an energetic opening, Bleed helps bring it down. Side B is the really bouncy-beat side. Those four songs fit together incredibly well. Graze -> Also Frightened is also pretty amazing. Finally, I split up In the Flowers and My Girls as the euphoric high of My Girls leads nicely into the come down of No More Runnin'. It just makes that side feel more balanced, and gives No More Runnin' more room to breathe for what it is. ...And a new one: "FEELS, People!" Side A: People Did You See the Words Grass Tikwid Flesh Canoe The Purple Bottle Fickle Cycle My Favorite Colors Side B: Seeing Twinkles Bees Banshee Beat Judy Biworker Daffy Duck Loch Raven Must Be Treeman Turn into Something This keeps the loud first half, quiet second half dynamic of Feels. I feel as if People is the better opener as it kind of drones on, which leads into the more dynamic Did You See the Words better. The Purple Bottle -> Fickle Cycle -> My Favorite Colors is pretty killer, too. Seeing Twinkles is generally despised, but it leads into Bees fairly well. Judy Biworker follows Banshee Beat very pleasantly and Must Be Treeman kind of jars you from the calm of the previous songs and prepares the listener for the upbeat Turn Into Something. BUT ANYWAYS, Here's the main reason I made this thread - last night I spent about 4.5 hours making a mix for Panda Bear's Person Pitch. And it turned out pretty awesomely. I used songs from the Person Pitch era mostly (including some singles/b-sides) and two songs NOT from this era. Those two, Surfer's Hymn and What I Do, stand apart from his other stuff yet fit in with this set because they are sampler based. I made some pretty gnarly transitions and got them sounding really great, and was able to change some of the EQ levels on the live stuff so they sound more like the studio stuff (aside from the vocals, which aren't as layered but are more reverbed and so, unfortunately, stand out as different). "Person Pitch Plus" Side A: Comfy in Nautica Take Pills (Part 1) Song for Ariel (not sure if it's Bowery Ballroom or ATP version, or another entirely) Tape Pills (Part 2) Surfer's Hymn (Part 1 - chanting portion - of De Kreun - Kortrijk, Belgium bootleg) Bro's What I Do (BBC version) Surfer's Hymn (Part 2 - the portion with the beat - of same bootleg - the actual song) Laughed for a World Filled with Fantasy (iTunes ZDB - Lisbon, Portugal version) Side B: Boneless (let's be honest, this is a Panda song that samples the Notwist) I'm Not Good Girl Carrots (Part 1) Bonfire of the Vanities (BBC version - dubby as hell) Carrots (Part 2) Search for Delicious (Visionaire 53: Sound track) Ponytail Things I thought about while making this: Comfy in Nautica is too perfect an opener to this set of songs, so it stays where it is. I took the idea for the Take Pills/Song for Ariel/Take Pills transition from the Bowery Ballroom bootleg, and it works really nicely. I threw Surfer's Hymn in because it, unlike most of the new songs, utilizes samplers instead of the guitar. Likewise, What I Do is in there as it is a Panda jam that uses samplers. I guess you could say Avey Tare does the guest vocals. The chanting of Surfer's Hymn (Part 1) makes for a nice intro to Bro's. Bro's, then, has the Tornadoes sample portion, transitions to Cat Stevens, and then comes back to the same Tornadoes track with What I Do, adding a nice little coda to Bro's. Surfer's Hymn (Part 2) flows nicely into Laughed for a World Filled with Fantasy, which ends with the Scott Walker sample being layered with a sick beat sample in the ZDB version. I faded this out to end this figurative "side." Boneless makes a killer opening track to anything, but I felt Comfy in Nautica was the better opener for the whole thing, so Boneless gets to open "Side B." But it works, and lets I'm Not come in really nicely. Good Girl into Carrots (Part 1) was too perfect a transition to change (or even split manually anyways). I split Carrots because I like how that last line ("Wade into the deep end of the ocean") flows into the sea-sounds of Search for Delicious. Plus, Bonfire of the Vanities fits in between the two parts of Carrots nicely, bringing the dub beats heavily. Search for Delicious into into Ponytail is pretty much perfect for a comedown to end the album. I also like that this ordering creates little mini-suites a'la Lablakely Dress/Fireworks/Essplode/Fireworks. It splits this fantasy "album" up nicely into: Comfy in Nautica "No Substitute"/Song for Ariel/Take Pills "Prayer"/Bro's/What I Do/Surfer's Hymn Laughed for a World Filled with Fantasy Boneless I'm Not Good Girl/Carrots/Bonfire of the Vanities/"Risk-Taker" Search for Delicious/"Chant"/Ponytail It's a pretty killer mix - I could upload it to a site for people to listen if anyone wants to give it a listen. And anyways, if you have your own versions of any albums or what-have-you, please share them! I know some were shared in the "Merriweather Post Fall Be Kind Pavilion" thread (or however that went), but yeah, with the wealth of unreleased tracks and the like, it's possible to make some pretty killer mixes. So maybe you can share. And if you like any of my mixtapes and would like me to edit something together for you, let me know. (Sorry about the length. I get carried away  )

(Through Crash)- 03-05-2010

this thread is great! I don't have any particularly cool mixes, though i've dabbled into 'mixing up' the songs a bit from time to time. i'm going to have to check out some of these transitions. Like Water Curses into Peacebone. I'm interested.

Sequel- 03-05-2010

I would love an upload of that Panda Mix

Hernan Giaggio- 03-05-2010

This all sounds really cool. I'd be interested to hear these, especially the Panda one. But also the others as well.

Stanshall- 03-05-2010

Again, I love your enthusiasm and approach here, tulis. I'd definitely be interested in uploads of ALL of these. I've tried and failed on numerous occasions to slip Animal Collective tracks into various mixes, both for home listening and when playing out but there's very little that's worked for me, except on a warm-up set when I've gotten away with bits of MPP. Nice work, man.

So I switched these over to "private files" so they are only available to the guys here... but I don't know if that just makes the file name unsearchable or if it makes it so even you can't access the file. BUT anyways, here's the Person Pitch Plus thing: Part 1: http://www.mediafire.com/?ok202tmgmmz Part 2: http://www.mediafire.com/?dwazgdjmomv The files were over 200 MB at lossless, so I had to convert them to 320 kbps mp3s. Sorry if they sound compressed (I haven't listened to the converted files) - mediafire doesn't let you upload files bigger than 200 MB. Let me know what you think!

Re: Animal Collective Album Mixtapes
Cool, tulis! Thanks heaps. I'll download and have a listen when I can. So with artists that I collect, I often like to make little 2-sided mixtapes that compile the songs of a certain era or recording period. Animal Collective, with their albums followed by EPs and/or B-sides, make this particularly easy. I like to do a similar thing with AC, and the Beatles as well. I guess mine aren't as creative as they're more just playlists with less work on transitions because I like to keep to the original order and transitions within the albums as much as possible. I also mostly just stick to stuff the band recorded in the same sessions. Seal Eyeing -> Cuckoo Cuckoo -> Safer -> Derek is mind blowing. Do you use that looping thing at the end of Seal Eyeing to transition to Cuckoo Cuckoo? That sounds like a good idea. (couldn't fit From a Beach on it - it's about 1:20 as is) Haha, I couldn't even fit Bleed with my Merriweather Be Kind mix on a CD-R but I left it anyway since it's the least connected to those sessions, and not as strong as the other tracks in my opinion. I put it back in, as well as Bleeding , on my MP3 player playlist. Boneless (let's be honest, this is a Panda song that samples the Notwist) Yeah, I reckon that would be the general consensus. I just listened to this for maybe the second time recently, after properly hearing the original. I've been buying some of the remixes and stuff on iTunes. 'Love Like a Sunset' is great too. My tracklists: SJS (Strawberry Jam Sessions) tracklisting and artwork by my brother here. I used the same set of five from Unsolved Mysteries to Fireworks as you, but some other orderings are different. 'Merriweather Be Kind': 1. In the Flowers 2. My Girls 3. Also Frightened 4. Graze / What Would I Want? Sky 5. Summertime Clothes (5b. Bleed) 6. Daily Routine 7. Bluish 8. On a Highway 9. Guys Eyes 10. Taste 11. I Think I Can 12. Lion in a Coma 13. No More Runnin 14. Brother Sport (15. Bleeding ) I really love how there seems to be a story behind the Bluish / Highway / Guys Eyes bit. Like, Dave wakes up from this lovely underwater dream to the boring and lonely journey on the road it makes it even more sad, then he mentions Noah's dreaming and it goes into his version of the dream. :) Feelings / "Feels Good" 1. Did You See the Words 2. Grass 3. Must Be Treeman 4. Flesh Canoe 5. The Purple Bottle 6. Bees 7. Banshee Beat 8. Fickle Cycle 9. Daffy Duck / My Favorite Colors 10. Loch Raven 11. Tikwid 12. Turn Into Something And I'd put People either before or after Words, or maybe before Bees. I really like the transition between Treeman and Flesh Canoe, and I'd like to try to put Colors back in the end of Daffy Duck like they did live. Haven't tried it yet though. I can post some Beatles ones if anyone likes.

Hernan Giaggio- 03-07-2010

This Panda mix kills so far, man. Good job.

terrortoast- 03-07-2010

you should upload your previous mix tapes as well. XD

johnnyvulpine- 05-22-2010

I know this is a really old thread, but i always listen to these panda bear mixtapes you made, tulis. one song in particular i love and have never heard before! you have it listed as ' (Visionaire 53: Sound track)'. where did you get it?

Hashman's ghost- 05-22-2010

I only heard that one recently, eh? It's nice. :) Here's a download link that might still work? http://www.mediafire.com/?mihdrd1jty3 I got it from here: http://www.brrrptzzapthesubject.com/?p=196 Really useful site!
